FAQs

  • ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis, which is the science of learning and behavior. It looks at how the environment around us shapes the way we act, and uses that understanding to teach new skills, encourage positive habits, and address behaviors that get in the way of everyday life. In short, ABA helps people learn, grow, and thrive in their environments.

  • This transition is one of the most significant and often most overwhelming moments for families supporting adults with IDD, and it is okay to not have all the answers right now.

What we do know is that the drop in services after graduation is real, and you are not imagining it. The structured support systems that existed throughout your loved one's school years look very different in adulthood, and figuring out what comes next can feel like starting from scratch.

That is exactly where SJH can help. We start by listening. We want to understand your loved one, their goals, their environment, and what your family needs right now. From there, we work with you to identify practical next steps, whether that means a behavioral assessment, support plan development, caregiver training, or simply helping you understand what options and resources are available.

You do not have to figure this out alone. Reach out and let's start the conversation.

  • ABA gives us a framework for understanding why behaviors happen and what we can do about them. In our consulting work, that translates into practical tools like functional behavior assessments, behavior support plans, and staff training, all designed around the specific person, environment, and goals we are working with. We do not bring a script. We bring a process that helps us build the right approach for your situation.

  • We work with various funding sources, including, Medicaid, private insurance, and are developing partnerships with Community Mental Health organizations. Reach out and we will help you explore what funding options may work for your situation. Add specifics on the Home page later?

  • Most people's experience with ABA comes from early intervention or school-based therapy, structured sessions focused on one individual in a clinical or home setting. That model works well for children, but adult consulting looks very different.

At SJH, we are not running structured therapy sessions. We are working alongside the teams, families, and organizations that support adults with IDD every day, assessing environments, training staff, and building systems that work without a consultant in the room.

The goal is to equip the people closest to the individual with the tools, strategies, and confidence to provide lasting, effective support on their own.

In short, traditional ABA is often delivered to an individual. What we do is built around and for the entire support system around that individual.

  • Absolutely, and you are not alone. The majority of BCBAs enter the field through child-focused training, and the transition to adult services requires a genuine shift in how you think about behavior, autonomy, dignity, and the role of the people you are working alongside.

At SJH, we offer consultation and mentorship specifically designed for BCBAs who want to do this work well. We help you translate the clinical skills you already have into approaches that are ethical, effective, and appropriate for adults with IDD. This is about expanding what you already know into a space that genuinely needs more skilled, committed practitioners.

If you are ready to grow your practice into adult services, we would love to connect!

  • Yes, and that is actually where we prefer to start. Coming into an organization and ignoring what is already in place is not collaboration, it is disruption. Before we recommend anything, we take time to understand your current systems, your team culture, and the individuals you support.

Our role is not to replace what is working. It is to build on it, fill in the gaps, and strengthen the areas where your team needs more support. Every recommendation we make is designed to fit your environment.

  • If you are asking this question, chances are you are already seeing something that concerns you. That instinct is worth paying attention to.

Families reach out to SJH for all kinds of reasons. Some are navigating behaviors that feel unsafe, unpredictable, or increasingly difficult to manage at home or in the community. Others are looking for support in building independence, communication skills, or daily living skills. Some organizations and caregivers simply want a second set of expert eyes to make sure the support they are providing is as effective as it can be.

There is no threshold you have to meet before reaching out. You do not need to be in crisis. If the people supporting your loved one are struggling, if goals are not being met, or if you simply want guidance on how to better support someone you care about, that is reason enough to start a conversation.

No question is too small, and no situation is too complex. Reach out and let us help you figure out the right next step.
